GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Apprenticeship – an employment based learning programme for employed learners following a recognised apprenticeship framework at level 3 approved for delivery in Wales.
Apprenticeship Frameworks for Wales - Those frameworks which comply with the Specification of Apprenticeship Standards for Wales (SASW) and that have been issued by Issuing Authorities designated for the sector by the Welsh Ministers.
Apprenticeship Matching Service – an on-line matching service to assist
employers in finding suitable Apprentices, and aspiring Apprentices, to find
employers.
Flexible learning – The opportunity for employees aged 19 and over to study an occupational competence qualification, a technical knowledge qualification or Essential Skills Wales qualifications from within a specific Foundation
Apprenticeship, Apprenticeship, or Higher Apprenticeship framework. The learning aim must be a whole qualification – i.e., not units or credits towards a qualification. Full framework completion is not required.
Foundation Apprenticeships – an employment based learning programme for employed learners following a recognised apprenticeship framework for Wales at level 2.
Key Skills / Key Skills Qualifications - the skills which are most commonly needed to succeed in a range of activities – at work, in education and training and in everyday life. They are available in six skills areas:
-Communication
- Application of Number
- Information and Communication Technology
(These are often referred to as the ‘first/main’ three and have been replaced by Essential Skills Wales in the same skills areas from 1st September 2010.)
and:
-Working with Others;
- Improving Own Learning and Performance;
- Problem Solving
which are usually referred to as the Wider Key Skills. These are currently under review and the new standards and qualifications are scheduled to become part of the Essential Skills Wales suite from 1st September 2012
Pathways to Apprenticeships – A programme of full-time study in a further
education institution to Sector Skills Council requirements in preparation for an apprenticeship.
Sector Skills Council (SSCs) - State-sponsored, employer-led organisations that cover specific economic sectors in the United Kingdom. SSCs are licensed by the Government through the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES).
Shared Apprenticeships - A Shared Apprenticeship is where learners ‘rotate’ between two or more employers in order to complete the Apprenticeship framework. Apprentices may have a contract of employment with one of the employers, or may be employed by the training provider in a ‘host employer’ or ‘group training association’ model.
Specification of Apprenticeship Standards for Wales (SASW) – sets out the minimum requirements to be met by recognised Welsh apprenticeship frameworks.
Young Recruits - The Young Recruits Programme is an all Wales programme that provides financial support to employers offering to recruit and train additional young apprentices (16-24 year olds). The programme offers a £50 per week wage subsidy paid to the employer; subject to the eligibility criteria and evidential requirements being met (this is not applicable to the Public Sector).
